Day 165: The Paranormal Series part 26 - Demons vs. Angels part 13

This blog is a continuation from:

In my previous blogs that I have done on for example serial killers or rapists or child molesters, I drew a parallel between the 'feeling' systems of these 'criminals' as they became addicted to the 'feelings' that were generated by the mind as they followed through on their actions, to the feeling systems that you and I might participate in - it all comes from the same mind systems, only difference is that a serial killer might not have the morality programming stopping him on acting out his addictions, whereas we do - and thus we act according to the rights and wrongs set out by society. But, the point is that these addictions to our 'feelings' are all from the same mind designs as base framework from which we all make our decisions. So, here one might shout at me and say 'it is just not the same thing dam you!!' Really? Have you paid attention to the slave labour trade where people work in dirty, dangerous factories for minimum wages so that you and I can go to the mall and buy excessively? Have we paid attention to the fact that each time I say to myself 'I just have to have that item' and I go and buy into consumerism, I am buying into a feeling and behind it is an entire industry that abuses people and our natural resources to feed me the end product of a possession? So how is Ted Bundy's Possession different to that of a demon, to that of the rest of humanity who become possessed by and are dictated to 'feelings'? How many people act on anger? How many of us have acted on jealousy? How many of us have acted on feelings that come up inside of us, that lead us to take action, because we believe that these feelings are real? Did Ted Bundy not believe the thoughts and feelings and urges he had were real and thus he allowed himself to follow the possession, because the outcome gave him relief and made him feel good? How many wars are fought over people's feelings? I believe god exists because I get a feeling inside my body that he is with me - therefore I will declare war on other people who 'feel' different Gods'. Mmmm fuzzy logic.

What I have come to realize over the years, as I look back at my Wicca experiences as I do when I really look at all the things I tried to do and attain, was that it was my drive for positive experiences, to feel empowered and for that ultimate desire that exist in each one of us to be a super star in my own life lol. So again, I reiterate, which I know was something that did not come through clearly in my video series, that I am not supporting one religion over another. I am sharing that I realized that all religions and the pursuit to belong to a religion from what I have come to understand, exist as a part of the inherent nature of the human to belong to something, to feel special and to create with ones mind an environment in which one can really create any reality of ones choosing. I mean in ones mind, we can really create any belief system and use small aspects based on reality to confirm that our religious belief is valid. Therefore whether one is a Satanist or Christian, it all comes down to the same factors existent within how one finds a belief system that supports ones personalities.

For example, J and I use to spend so many hours performing magic and 'raising energy'. Raising energy, basically involved us doing specific , you could say a combination between a trance, dance and meditation movements - whereby one harnesses or 'takes in' the energy from earth. Therefore we would either spend long evenings at his house 'raising energy' over candles and music, or we would do this wherever I was house sitting. House-sitting became a little job of mine, which I quite enjoyed, because it meant that I was out from under my moms feet so to speak, while earning a bit of an income, whilst having my own space to do my own things, of which Wicca was of course a large part. Especially considering that J and I would often be on the Ouija Board talking to spirits - this is definitely something that we could not do openly in front of either his parents or my mom, therefore we relished the opportunity to do so in our own 'private space'.

In 'raising energy;' - we were essentially, as the starting point of what we were doing drawing energy from the earth, for us to use in attaining or achieving outcomes that would be in our favour by castings spells and directing the energy into our spells. Therefore you could say we were participating in the same consumerist mind set as any other religion, where one partake in some form of ritual be it by doing your duty and going to church and thus appeasing a god or completing some satanic ritual - where it all came down to us trying to out do and out compete the rest of humanity, by adhering to a spiritual/religious practise which would allow us to get what we wanted in life. So the question I have been asking ever since is whether spirituality and religion in any way actually support the human more than it being another consumerist trap of finding ways to make oneself happy, because in life we just don’t get what we want, because this current money system does not allow for individual freedom of expression and thus religion provides for mystical methods and at most 'hope' through which one can bride and conjure good fortune. This is actually quite sad, if one look at it, because religion and spirituality is portrayed as an essential developmental part of the human, yet if you take a closer look you will find that it is merely about buying ones happiness as a result of our capitalistic system. I spent many hours trying to draw and manifest a better life for myself through my beliefs, my faith and the techniques I used to channel energy into my intentions (magic).

Day 148: Living by the principle of what is best for all part 2

Day 143: From Criminal to Principled Living
Day 144: Realising and Living my utmost potential part 1
Day 145: Realising and Living my utmost potential part 2

This blog is a continuation from:
Day 147: Living by the principle of what is best for all part 1

“At times I fought the world system, where the ‘darker’ character in me would come out and fight and cuss and blame ‘society’ and religion and my parents etc, blaming everyone for my locked in feeling where I wanted to just be left alone to do my own thing, but was always being contained by either a lack of money or societies rules. Then I would give into the perceived pressure, and realize that to survive in this world I had to work and to survive, so within this I ‘chose’ to follow an interest which was healing and the art of understanding the metaphysics of the human mind and body and how energy worked. So I studied Kinesiology, Reiki and Energy healing, but all the while I felt constantly overwhelmed by depression – something that I inherited from my father, but which also existed as part of my pre-programmed design to give up on myself and exist in conflict my entire life…”
So years ago as I mentioned in my previous blog, I started on a very superficial level, becoming aware of what people were doing/experiencing, and what Society was doing that I could see was not what is best for everyone. I could see that something was wrong with the money system, with the rules and values of society as being in contradiction to itself  and how religion and family values were for example based on avoiding fear and supporting class, and entitlement. What I did not understand at the time, but started investigating once I joined Desteni, was who I was as equal within what I saw in others.

So after joining Desteni, I worked with myself for a long time, investigating my own pre-programmed designs and my genetically inherited traits, which I accepted as who I was, therefore defining and limiting myself into a being whom I knew for years was stuck and afraid and angry. I did not know how to assist myself – but it was in this questioning that I ended up asking the questions that got me here. In this blog – if you have read my previous blogs – you will notice that the direction I have been taking with exploring the mind of the criminal has always been to not separate criminals from ‘normal people’ as we would be so presumptuous to call ourselves, but to draw the parallels within the Designs that exist in ALL humans to varying degrees.

serial_killers_bannerFor example I would draw a parallel between the consciousness Psyche and Design that exists within the Serial killer as someone who’s design is focussed around specific patterns of possession, anger, fear, desire for control and desire for power etc. Then I look at these same design points that exist within myself and ‘humanity as a whole’  - and how we exist in society supporting each other’s designs, to the extent that we will continue to justify why it is ok for us to have people harming each other, without really at any point stepping in and stopping any and all forms of abuse – even through to political, family, religious and societal levels. Therefore I explore how we all allow each others to get away with harming and abusing because if I allow you to do what you want, you will do the same for me. And that is the biggest resistance that people face when reading or hearing the words in the principle of ‘Living by the Principle of what is best for all – guiding me in thought, word and deed to always in all ways direct problems to the best possible outcome for all’.

That is why one will find that the thoughts that come up inside oneself is always ‘why should I change what I think, what I believe, what I do, what I allow inside myself and in my external world – others don't do it’ or ‘but I am also just trying to enjoy my life’ or ‘but this is how god made me’... That is why in all societies we only draw a line on abusing if lives are lost or a ‘law is broken’ and laws are designed only to stop the obvious crimes – however the same type of crime could happen in a family environment – but as a society we continue to exist around each others lives – where behind closed doors abuse of all forms continues to exist. Most forms of abuse are not even seen as ‘abuse’ it is seen as the right of the parent, the right of the politician, the right of the police or law maker, the right of the land owner, the right of the business owner, the right of the capitalist, the right of the child, mother, father, priest, friend, husband, wife, individual etc. ‘Freedom of choice’ is always used as the statement that is supposed to end all arguments/perspectives against our individual lack of self responsibility – why our internal worlds do not require cleaning, because it is our right to freedom of expression what is within.

In Psychology we touch on some of these practices that are actually realized as not being what is best for us such as ‘condemning someone because of a different belief system, bullying a child because they wont accept the same religion as the parent, victimising someone in the community for being gay/lesbian, attacking someone's character online because of their hairstyle or life style preference, society victimising/targeting a minority group which stir reactions and fears due to their different way of living. These are but a hand full of examples among millions of events that happen every day in millions of house holds and communities all over the world. Where people are enforcing their personal belief systems, ideologies, values and ways of thinking onto others and for most of these situations as I mentioned above – they are seen as justifiable by the rest of society under the banner of ‘protecting society’ or ‘your family’ or ‘your way of living’.

Day 117: Capitalism Part 5: Self-Forgiveness on Blame and Self-Responsibility within Capitalism

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to believe that Capitalism as the system that is supposed to support Life - is not able to be changed and that who I am is insignificant to even question why we have allowed the system that is supposed to serve life - has become one that supports greed and corruption at the price of millions of lives every day.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to go to work each day, fearing what might happen to me: on the way there driving, will a drunk person come along and crash into my car, or will some stranger walk up to me and attack me, due to the decision they have made to take vengeance on others based on their life experience, drug use or the point they have reached within their life where they are possessed by fear or rage, to the point of acting out and not even realizing the consequences of their actions.

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing  myself to when reading in the news about how each day people are acting out, becoming possessed and taking vengeance on others in the form of terrorist attacks, shootings, stabbings, abuse, serial killers, parents that kill children, people that abuse animals and children - where I have never stopped for a moment to ask - what has happened within this persons mind  - to go from being a child themselves, an innocent - brought into this world - where something changes within them - to never stop to investigate my fellow humans who are acting out in these extreme ways.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to never stop to investigate what is behind these actions - to investigate the deeper influences and factors behind why a child grows up being a killer and a person who derives satisfaction from bring pain, death and suffering to other beings.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to find the only solace that I am able to within this, by turning a blind eye, ignoring the facts even though the research that already exists, even though marginal shows that family abuse, environmental influences and stress brought on by societal pressures and economic stress has a serious impact on who people are becoming the the mind-possession type cases we are seeing in the world.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to turn a  blind eye to these causes of suffering and abuse - so that I do not firstly have to face the fact that there is something very wrong with our world, with our society, with our economic system and with our religions - where we are driving innocent beings to a life of extreme actions and choices to have to survive - but where we as the observers do nothing and claim to not have the capacity to change what it is that we are directly able to investigate as the causes

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to then go into absolute fear, fear of death, pain and suffering when I am faced with the reality behind why suffering exists - to the point where I will protect the same systems that are responsible for abuse to the individual - because inside me, inside my mind - I fear retribution by some god or whoever I believe is responsible for us - so much that I will not question the system.

therefore I forgive myself for accepting and allowing  myself when faced with for example a story of a building collapsing on workers, I am unwilling and unable to even place myself in that persons shoes, to understand that this could have been me and that the people who died had by birth right - the right just like me - to also live a full, happy, healthy life- and that it is by my choice to ignore the fact that these things are happening to my Equal's within this world and that what this says about me -as my lack of empathy, my lack of responsibility is that I do not yet see myself as equal to life - and that within this I must have at some stage accepted the brainwashing that i am nothing, the people and animals that die each day - are nothing - and that this is the value system that I have ascribed to all life.

and therefore I forgive myself for accepting and allowing  myself to have ascribed this value system of nothing to the future generations, to my children - because what I refuse to see and understand is that obviously at some stage if I give permission now to this system where the lives of the innocent are used for profit by permission of all of humanity - then obviously - just like the people who die every day in work related tragedies - at some stage it will affect us all as our future generations will all be faced with these same consequences - where their lives, as ascribed by me as worth nothing will also be used within capitalism purely for profit - and this I already see within my own life and the lives of those around me, as we all go to work and are underpaid our worth in participation and left still with rising debt - but we refuse to see and understand that this closed system called capitalism will more and more take the lives of the innocent - which will be the future generations I have already given as I have ascribed their lives to mean 'nothing'.

Day 90: International Crime Research: Mass Murderers Part 4: The Physical Reaction of Mass Murderers

This blog is a continuation from:

Day 89: International Crime Research: Mass Murderers Part 3: Reaction of Mass Murderers

Physical Dimension:

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself, once I have fuelled my thoughts and imagination on how I will seek revenge on the other, to now allow myself to exist so far in my mind where I am walking equal and one to these thoughts and imaginations, that I do not notice that I am busy restricting my breathing, tensing my muscles and changing my physicality,

from there;

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to now as I participate in programming myself physically by repeatedly thinking the thoughts and allowing the imaginations of revenge, to - together with the mind dimensions, to also now program my physical with specific reactions/behaviours, linked to the mind experiences -walked in the previous blogs, for example

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to first program into my physical the physical tightness of my shoulders, the hunching of my back, the tightening and changing of my breathing, to the clenching of my fists,

then

as these basic physical reactions are programmed together with the backchat, fears and imaginations and pictures of how I will seek revenge within my mind -now as time progresses I start reacting more severely physically, due to the energy I have compounded over time, by participating extensively, consistently in the mental aspects/dimensions of my plans for revenge/retaliation,

therefore;

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to program into the physical layered energetic reactions, which then become physically compounded reactions such as lashing out in anger by striking at children, animals, objects - whereby my mind will rationalise the outburst in terms of something that cannot protect itself or speak up for itself.

within this;

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to compound this energy build up through participating in the mind dimensions, further in time as I create all kinds of scenarios in my mind of how I have been 'hurt, cheated, done in', and as time progresses the physical possession takes place at an energy level - after which I now am no longer only thinking about reacting/acting out -but become possessed by this pre-programed system - that I designed over years/months/weeks or days.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself then to eventually become physically possessed as my physical reaction aligns within the amount of thinking I have been doing in relation to seeking revenge, whereby I physically seek ways to harm myself or others, as this physical 'lashing out' allows for the release of the energy that I have compounded through participating in the mental dimensions.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to then further become possessed by the power and sense of release of being able to finally express by grief/anger/annoyance - as I now physically for the first time experience a relive that was not there before,

therefore;

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to now want to directly lash out at the individual/group/object that I am blaming for my own internal conflict I have compounded for myself through the use of Ego

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to now lash out by using physical measures which could range from picking up a stick, hitting with my fists, even to the extent of using deadly force such as shooting, strangling or the use of bombs etc...

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to use this deadly force to mass murder any individual or group, I perceive annoys me or stand in my way of getting what I want - not for a moment considering the consequences of creating a world, where instead of living the solution of breath, by stopping reactions based on protecting the Ego, but instead the individual seeking self gratification at the expense of others, which as we see today in the news - has created a world where mass mind possession is occurring now at all times, as people compound the mental energy of revenge, ego into physical possessions.

I commit myself, when and as I find myself compounding any energy through thinking about a scenario using any imagination or opinion or fair/unfair instead of simply looking at my self responsibility in creating the outcome that is best for all, to stop, breathe, relax myself physically, letting go of any built-up thought designs, and walking the physical steps of self correction.

I commit myself within the walking of the steps of self correction, to always look at how the other person/group perceive their perspective within this situation, to also take responsibility for the creation point from their perspective, as the energy we build up during such experience of 'feeling done in/deceived' is always coming from various participatory points/parties - therefore;

I commit myself to always place myself 'in the shoes' of all parties, and align myself through observing the starting point of each, to assist and support myself in self forgiving the point, correcting it as myself to no longer accept and allow deception, no matter from which starting point/ past experience it happens.

Day 87: International Crime Research: Mass Murderers Part 1

This blog is a continuation from:

http://crimesjourneytolife.blogspot.com/2012/12/day-79-international-crime-research.html

According to Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mass_murder

"Mass murder (in military contexts, sometimes interchangeable with "mass destruction" or "genocide") is the act of murdering a large number of people (four or more), typically at the same time or over a relatively short period of time.[1] According to the FBI, mass murder is defined as four or more murders occurring during a particular event with no cooling-off period between the murders. A mass murder typically occurs in a single location in which a number of victims are killed by an individual or more.[2] Most acts of mass murder end with the death of the perpetrator(s), whether by direct suicide or being killed by law enforcement.[citation needed]

A mass murder differs from a spree killing in that it may be committed by individuals or organizations alike, whereas a spree killing may only be committed by one or two individuals. Mass murder may also be defined as the intentional and indiscriminate murder of a large number of people by government agents. Examples are the shooting of unarmed protestors, the carpet bombing of cities, the lobbing of grenades into prison cells and the random execution of civilians. Mass murderers are different from spree killers, who kill at two or more locations with almost no time break between murders and are not defined by the number of victims, and serial killers, who may kill large numbers of people over long periods of time. The largest mass killings in history have been attempts to exterminate entire groups or communities of people, often on the basis of ethnicity or religion. Some of these mass murders have been found to be genocides and others to be crimes against humanity, but often such crimes have led to few or no convictions of any type.

The concept of state-sponsored mass murder covers a range of potential killings. It is defined as the intentional and indiscriminate murder of a large number of people by government agents. Examples are shooting of unarmed protestors, carpet bombing of cities, lobbing of grenades into prison cells and random execution of civilians."

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to define humanity as separate groups, according to which I either like or dislike these separate groups, depending on whether they are similar to me and what I give value to within life.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to grow up accepting the fears of my parents and others adults of other groups - and through the accumulation of these fears into adulthood, I will even create inner conversations and thoughts about how I would react if faced with such a group and how I would through words or deeds attempt to remove the group - if I feel threatened due to my own accumulated fears.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself, by belonging to groups and organisations such as political parties and religion groups, confess that I am separate from most others and will familiarise myself with methodologies and methods that focus on the protection of oneself against other groups.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to have thoughts of harm towards other individuals as I allow myself to feel more threatened each day - by other groups/individuals - as I allow a society to exist which thrives off of competition and annihilation of the 'weak'.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to define some as being weak due to them appearing physically different than than myself, acting different to me or belonging to a different group - thus through developing such irrational justification I am pre-programming myself into a mass murderer of individuals who through societies values are deemed less worthy of life - thus justifying any harm, abuse or death that comes to such individuals - where I do not even flinch because I have already accepted that any group I label as inferior to myself does not deserve the rights I would like for myself, which is to live a dignified life without fear or harm.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to protect any government or group that preaches and practices separation, discrimination and judgment - whereby I am silently giving permission to the mass murders that occur each day - as those with power elected by the people - destroy the lives of those who do not have the ability to stand up for themselves.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to secretly believe that governments and politicians and religious leaders 'protect us from harm' - which is actually the division of labour and the monopolising of resources - away from those who are not able to stand up for themselves.

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to realize that each day that any group or individual is harmed or killed so another group is able to flourish - then myself as the one that benefits from such murder and harm, is in fact a co-conspirator in mass murder.

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to see, realize and understand that the definition of mass murder, just like the definition of a serial killer is only interpreted as far as we are willing to live with ourselves and is never taken as far as bringing responsibility to any and all humans who allow the destruction or death of another group or individual so that another group/individual may prosper - therefore;

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to realize that by standing back and watching as wars are fought to protect my lifestyle and wealth - is the same as signing a permission slip to mass murder any individual or group whom would interfere with my lifestyle - which is derived and designed through the sweat of others, who either conform to be a working slave to make my life more comfortable - or die from starvation;

therefore

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to realize that at any given moment if I allow a system to exist that will bring harm or death directly or indirectly to another group or individual so that I may flourish and live a life of pleasure - I am in fact a murderer of the masses that die each day in what is ignored and justified within Capitalism.

I commit myself to show that the current economic system is flawed, and that even one death within such a system, should always be brought under question - as it should show that the system requires revision and realignment as there is a point that was not taken into consideration - thus costing the Life of another.

Therefore I commit myself to show that capitalism is so flawed as it daily takes the lives of millions not to mention the continual abuse and suffering - but that we as humans have come to accept this as our fate - just like we have come to accept the good/evil concepts of a god and hell and that we are eternally condemned - and that is why mass murderers as the human civilisation try and suppress the reality of what we know we do and participate in each day - with drugs, alcohol and addictions.

I commit myself to show that Capitalism does not have to be flawed and that everything is here as a system for us to change to one that stands by the principles of protecting and honouring Life for all, instead of what exists now - as a system that corrupts and harms so a few may experience bliss.

We are thus here starting a project of investigating what Capitalism should be like according to its very own principles - and thus, what requires to be adjusted within the current Capitalistic system to make it a system that works for everyone. Equal Money Capitalism will be the necessary transition step to as a global society towards establishing an Equal Money System as presented at www.equalmoney.org.

Day 79: International Crime Research: Serial Killers, Mass Murderers and Sociopaths Part 13: Learning to Kill

My Self-Forgiveness will focus on the following Article:

The Qualitative Report Volume 9 Number 2 June 2004: Sipping Coffee with a Serial Killer: On Conducting Life History Interviews with a Criminal Genius

Author: J. C. Oleson

In each blog I will walk self-forgiveness on different parts of the Article, discussing the developmental aspects of somebody who 'learns to kill'.

This blog is a continuation from the previous blog in this series:

http://crimesjourneytolife.blogspot.com/2012/12/day-77-international-crime-research.html

To summarize - the next few blogs with focus on the final aspects of how 'X' learned how to use and be comfortable with violence/crime:

-At seventeen years old, while a junior in high school, X was invited to a club with a friend. While waiting for the friend a man in the club picked a fight with X. A stranger comes to his defense and beats up the bully. X spends the rest of the evening talking to this man (Vince) and befriending him.
- Towards the end of the evening when it comes to paying the bill, vince offers to pay. Vincent tosses a $100.00 bill onto the table. X, accustomed to teenager’s wages, was overwhelmed by such extravagance. He didn’t know who Vincent was, but he was anxious to find out, as he was intrigued by this courageous, generous man.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to associate a positive experience to seeing people act with bravery and to associate positive belief systems around what I am seeing and understanding - due to how I grew up with the pre-programmed belief-system that good, strong, courageous actions are to be seen in a specific way.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to then define the individual as trustworthy and of strength, due to them acting in ways that resonante with me - meaning in ways that I have already associated values to - which allow me to automatically respond positively to the person or situation, without ever bothering to ask or check who this person is and whether their actions are in honor of Life and What is Best for All or only their own self-interest.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to through the development of friendship and closeness to the idea of who this person or event is -to completely disregard the rest of my world and the world in general as I will follow this good feeling, while never considering that there are billions of beings on this planet each day who suffer, while I follow the blissful energetic experience associated to this one person or event - placing myself in a mind-bubble of bliss, which indicates my own self interest and that my definition of strength or courage has therefore nothing to do with real courage.strength, but about who or what can I attain my own self-interest through.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to categorize courage and strength into 'who will serve my needs' and thus within this world we see that the real problems such as war, poverty, abuse never get sorted out - because war, poverty and abuse always serves somebody's self interest and therefore nobody wants to change it, because everybody knows they gain in life from permitting such atrocities.

therefore

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to remain permissive of war, poverty and abuse as I see, realize and understand that it serves me and my life on this planet - but at the same time my own conscious will bother me and therefore by creating diversions such as charities and causes -I get to apease my conscious by pretending to show an interest in the suffering of a particular group - while ignoring the actual problems underlying all forms of abuse within the world.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself just like the 'serial-killer' in this story to project an image of bravery and strength onto one person or group, so that I may protect my self interest and my life and money - while obviously never stopping to consider that there is abuse in the world happening due to the world systems I give permission to - which I will not change as it serves me.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to through this projection-effect, create and participate in causes and charities into which I wil, invest emotion and feeling energy such as empathy and strength - so that as the world together -we can all claim we do look out for the best interest of all because we support 'charities.''

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to follow ideologies around strength where I will deliberately misguide myself into believing that strength for example is in how agressive, dominant, protective, sneaky, or wealthy you are - not realizing that in fact I am only therefore protecting what protects my comfortable existence and therefore have never actually considered what strength and compassion would be as I do not consider the consequences of my existence here and the impact my existence has on Life as this Physical Reality.

I commit myself that when and as I find myself placing hope, fear or even desire within another person, object or event - to stop, breathe and remind myself to remain here within my principle of self first - meaning to not create personality constructs and characters that require energy through relationships to characters in the world - and that i walk in self-support of myself, but also what is required to bring about a change in the world

as I commit myself when and as I find myself justifying why our current world systems are acceptable, as I slip into the character of acceptance - to stop, and through my dedication to Life which is me, to remain stable and focussed and to never settle for justifications and excuses in a world where Abuse is still existent.

Day 73: International Crime Research: Serial Killers, Mass Murderers and Sociopaths Part 10: Learning to Kill

My Self-Forgiveness will focus on the following Article:

The Qualitative Report Volume 9 Number 2 June 2004: Sipping Coffee with a Serial Killer: On Conducting Life  History Interviews with a Criminal Genius

Author: J. C. Oleson

In each blog I will walk self-forgiveness on different parts of the Article, discussing the developmental aspects of somebody who 'learns to kill':

"As part of my Ph.D. research on criminal genius, I conducted 44 semistructured interviews. One of the 44 subjects, in particular, stood out. This noteworthy individual claimed that he had killed 15 people. His story was particularly interesting because – unlike most social research involving  serial killers – he claimed that he had never been arrested or convicted for  his homicides. Compelled by his account, I met with this subject on five additional occasions, and gradually compiled his criminal life history.
Ethical and legal considerations limited inquiry into several dimensions of this subject’s life history, but over time, an interesting and richly textured narrative emerged. This article first describes the life experiences of this offender and then describes the methodological choices that shaped the research.
Because criminologists have historically focused their research on vulnerable populations such as juveniles or prison inmates (Barnes & Teeters, 1959), almost nothing is known about the patterns of criminal behavior among gifted  adults with exceptional cognitive abilities (Blackburn, 1993).
Intrigued by this enigmatic topic, I studied the crimes of geniuses – offenses committed by people with IQ scores of 132 or higher (Simonton, 1994). I relied upon the self-report questionnaire (Huizinga & Elliott, 1986; Thornberry & Krohn, 2000) to inventory the offenses of my subjects. The selfreport instrument is one of the only means to effectively study hidden offending (Hood & 193   The Qualitative Report June 2004 Sparks, 1970). Using a newly designed self-report questionnaire, I collected extensive self-report data from 424 subjects in three different groups of geniuses:
1. Members of the International Society  for Philosophical Enquiry [ISPE], an international elite high  IQ society with a 150 IQ  [99.9 percentile] admissions threshold
2. Undergraduate and graduate students  at prestigious American and British universities
3. High IQ inmates incarcerated in American and British correctional facilities.

Sampling from these groups allowed me to tap all three categories of genius described by Towers (1990): the outsider (the gifted individual, who joins a high IQ society to find the mental stimulation that he or she cannot find through professional or social avenues), the conformist (the gifted individual, who finds sufficient mental stimulation through work and peers), and the dropout (the gifted individual, who cannot or will not abide by the norms and laws of society).
The questionnaire included 17 demographic questions, 72 different offense items (ranging in seriousness from the abuse of work privileges to homicide committed outside wartime), and asked subjects about the books, movies, and famous figures that had shaped their lives.

I did not want my study to be a dry recitation of crime rates and correlations. Numbers and statistics alone could not capture the social realities of the offenses that I was documenting (Bryman, 1988). To do so, I needed qualitative results. I needed to write my subjects’ stories, to describe their thinking and feeling, and to convey some of the sensual aspects of their crimes.
I settled for conducting semi-structured interviews with 44 subjects (Brenner, Brown, & Canter, 1985). I purposively selected interview subjects (Jupp, 1989), trying to gather qualitative data across the entire spectrum of offending. All 44 of the interviews were fascinating. Still, the interviews that I conducted with the subject I called “Mr. X” stood out from the others, intriguing me.

When I met with the subject I called Mr. X, I was overwhelmed by the sentiment. Mr. X, who was not much older than I was, had been raised in a similar family environment and had been educated in some of the same gifted education programs as me. It  made it frightfully easy to imagine myself in his shoes and to picture myself making the same choices that he had unwittingly made. In trying to understand what had led Mr. X to embrace crime, I was – I believe – simultaneously trying to understand  what had insulated me from it (Patton, 2002, p. 11-12).
The six interviews that I conducted with Mr. X generated a wealth of qualitative data. Because research access to elite groups (like people with genius-level IQ scores) is often incredibly difficult to negotiate (e.g., Fussell, 1983; Nader, 1972), criminologists know virtually nothing about the crimes of the elite. It is exceptionally rare to find an elite, who will discuss undetected offenses. To find an elite, who is willing to discuss undetected offenses – including murder, – is unprecedented.

I will first recount the criminal life history of Mr. X. His account is broken into sections set off with evocative epigrams drawn from literature and philosophy that help to set the tone of his story.

 Mr. X

At 31 years old, he was a young urban professionals, who rose from the ranks of the X Generation (Coupland, 1991) to succeed in the cutthroat job markets of California during the dot-com 1990’s.

He dressed in conservative labels, wore an old Rolex, scuffed, expensive leather shoes, and drove a nondescript luxury sedan. He was exceptionally bright, articulate, and had been educated at a prestigious university.  He had  scored a 162 on a self-administered IQ test, placing him in the 99.995 percentile (Jensen, 1980), catapulting him well beyond the 132 IQ minimum threshold of “genius” (Simonton, 1994).

We met on six separate occasions. During the second interview, he began to describe his offenses and the antecedents that (he believed) led him to the commission of these crimes. By gradually collecting the details of this man’s life throughout the six interviews, I was able to  assemble his life history (Atkinson, 1998; Sarbin, 1986; Shaw, 1930). It was a remarkable history. Indeed, Mr. X was not entirely the affable genius he seemed to be. X had been shot three times. X also acknowledged smuggling thousands of kilograms of cocaine into the United States.

While “serial killer” is a term typically used to describe individuals compelled to kill for sexualized power-seeking reasons (Egger, 1998; Hickey, 1991; Norris, 1988; Wilson & Seaman, 1990), if X’s claim was true, he qualified as a serial killer within the law enforcement taxonomy proposed by Douglas, Burgess, Burgess, and Ressler, “Serial murder is defined as three or more separate  events in three or more separate locations with an emotional cooling-off period between homicides” (1992, p.21).
In addition to murder and drug smuggling, X admitted to illegally manipulating bank accounts, forging official documents, fencing stolen goods and automobiles, and perjuring himself under oath.

And he’d gotten away with it.

Growing Up Different

"Farrington (1994) identified several antecedent risk factors that appear to predispose young people to juvenile delinquency and adult criminality, including low intelligence, socio-economic deprivation, and poor parental supervision. The stereotype of the common criminal (Sarbin, 1969) – the young man calcified by years of deprivation and abuse into a remorseless criminal – appears to be, at least in part, supported by criminological research (e.g., Agnew, 1992; Shaw & McKay, 1972)."

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to condition the world into believing that people of low intelligence, socio-economic deprivation, and poor parental supervision are more likely to become criminals, instad of looking at how and why we as a society and as the parents and care takers of the human race allow such things as low intelligence, socio-economic deprivation, and poor parental supervision.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing an economic system that determines the life of all beings on this planet, to the consequential outflow of somebody taking the lives of other beings, simply from a point of suppressed rage, based on a shitty life experience which was caused by things like poverty, separation, unequal education, depravation, greed and abuse within a family system, caused by the parents being under constant pressure due to their own financial worries and emotional pressure experienced from the life experienced they were pressured into.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing a world where we value sensationalism so much, over that of life that we will value - the energetic experience we get from reading about serial killers more than any form a self honest realization, that our world not only produces beings that suffer under 'low intelligence, socio-economic deprivation, and poor parental supervision' - but that this in many cases results in being lashing out at and into society, where they abuse and harm others, who are essentially also innocent within it all - instead of finding solutions once and for all to stop these generational, societal cycles of abuse.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing a society where we pride ourselves in apparently having intelligent people - but at the cost of an education system that divides children into groups, where only specific groups are catered for, and these groups get effective or semi effective educations, while the other groups become dumbed down due to the education system not providing for them - and within this capitalistic system -we realize if we dare to be self honest that if you are not thinking like a machine ready to survive in the world of working and money - then you will not even be able to feed yourself.

I forgive myself for creating intellectualized titles and categories for people that are of 'low intelligence, socio-economic deprivation, and poor parental supervision', instead of calling this a crime against life, and as criminologist, writing and communicating firstly about these crimes, before blabbering in self importance about these beings as if I am somehow superior to them in that God bestowed me with some special, 'ability' to watch as these beings are subjected to abuse and harm, so that I may write papers about how pathetic these beings are as they exist as characters in a story.

I commit myself to make self-education available to all, where the emphasis is the purification of the individual into Life that all can Live to the fullest and I commit myself to make it possible for each to walk this journey to life, no matter where you come from as long as you have the willpower to write yourself to freedom.

I commit myself to propose a change to the current economic system, into one that will stop all these cycles of abuse and re-form how humanity has functioned thus far as the starting point of ourselves as simplistic self interest and greed.

The Serial Killer Mind:
The Case of Jeffrey Dahmer

My Self-Forgiveness will be based on the main points taken from the following article:

The Case of Jeffrey Dahmer: Sexual Serial Homicide from a Neuropsychiatric Developmental Perspective
http://libraryresources.cqu.edu.au/JFS/PDF/vol_47/iss_6/JFS2002051_476.pdf

"As an adolescent he made superficial contact with others but was viewed by his father and his peers as isolative and socially inept. As early as age four or five, JD did not appear interested in participating in activities emanating from his social environment.
By age 15 years, his father described him as a child who had rejected all efforts to develop interests in the world that his father attempted to introduce."

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself as parent to not see, realize and understand that my children do not want to communicate and participate with other people, based on the same acceptances and value systems as I was trained to believe in.

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to see, realize and understand that within my own childhood my parents trained me to repeat their belief systems, which were all based on Fear of themselves and Fear of the world, and to make it my belief systems, in an attempt to protect the values based on protecting self within the world, which is simplistically always been about protecting the Ego of the individual over the Ego of other individuals.

I commit myself to stop belief systems, and to direct myself here within my physical body, within my physical reality, according to principled living as I realize that the only way to stop this mess we have created, is for each to live what is practically supportive of ourselves within the consideration of the planet and those we share the planet with.

I forgive myself for not accepting and allowing myself to see, realize and understand that due to us existing in a world where all communication is based on protecting the individual against other individuals, we are and have created communication and interactions, not based on self-honest self expression, but rather on manipulating and deceiving each other, to make sure that we are seen in a specific light by others usually as something more than what we really are, especially if one compare the inner experience to what we want others to beLIEve about us.

I commit myself to communicate clearly, without hidden innuendoes, desires or fears.
I commit myself to stop hiding behind my fears and desires and indadvertedly projecting my fears into the future and therefore changing how I dress, communicate and behave to try and prevent this future projected fear.
I commit myself to show how we are living to appease the fears of the mind, instead of living, and therefore i commit myself to show that the current world of communication is not clear and based on physical practicalities, but on the hidden realities within the Psyche.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself as the next generation, even though as a child i cringed at how my parents spoke to me and projected their fears and desires onto me, I still continue the human-legacy of manipulating the children into accepting the world as it is by accepting the way things have always been - as the religions, education systems, value systems and cultures we keep giving permission to, even though mathematically i can see that these institutions have never done what is best for all, but instead contributed towards dysfunctional family units, dysfunctional individuals and then dysfunctional societies.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to believe that the current value systems that the individual hold onto are there 'for a good reason' and 'serve a purpose' - without actually looking for myself and being self honest, in realizing that no value system thus far, has resulted in a world that is best for all, and that our current value systems have only resulted in the abuse of each other in the name of protecting the human and 'individuality'.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing the ideology behind which religion, culture and value system exist, to be of such a great mind fuck to me, as I have been manipulated into believing in its greatness, that i continue to force my children to believe in these same ideologies, while seeing a world that is in chaos and a world where people are killing and hurting others simply for survival and for entertainment.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing the churches, schools and governments to continue brainwashing me - into believing that to prevail against the 'bad that happens in society' we have to 'cling' to the 'good' found within society, family and the entire concept behind the value found in 'living within the system' and accepting the role of humanity as we are -as god fearing people.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself as parent/caretaker of the future generations to implement within myself, the same coping mechanisms to life that my parents used and their parents used to try and control, suppress and manipulate human behavior and human thinking, instead of self honesty, self forgiveness and self responsibility of the individual throughout the preprogrammed designs that may come up - so that we become the directive principles - instead of the human being subject to our 'experiences' over which we believe we have no control - which leads to a society where we avoid self responsibility and implement instead values and rules according to which we 'must exist/function/communicate' - which only serve further to control through fear.

I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to view my child through this filter I have come to accept and to not see, realize and understand that I am asking of my child to simply copy behaviors that not even I understand as I have not understood how the quantum mind of the human designs all of our reactions, and coping mechanisms, which shows me that my responses to my world and other people are automated based on fears and conflicts which if I look at in self honesty - I would be able to see the exact moments that I lied in the presence of another and decided to present what was expected of me, instead of speaking what I really experienced in that moment.

Therefore I forgive myself for accepting and allowing myself to ignore the reality, we as humans are aware of - which is that we adjust the way we speak, behave and act - to 'fit into' how society and our parents want us to act - even though most of the time, we know we are only doing so to be accepted - and thus we create the next generation of lies, which we present as truth as human behavior.

I commit myself to share, how we as Desteni have come to understand how the quantum mind functions, based on the real moments where perceptions were programmed into the human psyche and how this becomes the behavior and words we express, which are not based on the reality of how we experience ourselves, which are based on what is really going on in reality - but based on survival.

Day 65: International Crime Research: Serial Killers, Mass Murderers and Sociopaths Part 2

This blog is a continuation from:

http://crimesjourneytolife.blogspot.com/2012/10/day-64-international-crime-research.html#

- Please read for a reference/introduction into how and why I will be walking this series.

Now I will draw extracts from the following document mentioned in Part 1, which will provide us with contextual background information on the Psychological findings behind the 'how and why' of Serial Killers. My next blog will focus on exploring the Childhood, Life experiences and choices of a Serial Killer, together with the Self-Forgiveness and Self-Corrective Statements. I will walk Self-Forgiveness and Self-Corrective statements on a few known Serial Killers to show how the Patterns exist within the Psyche and Mind -Construction of the Human being who takes the backchat as internal conversations to the extent of Self-Mind-Possession.

Title: CRITICAL ANALYSIS OF RESEARCH RELATED TO THE CRIMINAL MIND OF SERIAL KILLERS

Author: Cindy A. Pokel

Date: August, 2000

- Research has shown an increase in the amount of serial murders that has occurred in the second half of the twentieth century with a trend that is destined to continue. Federal Bureau of Investigation statistics report that there are 20,000 murders per year and over thepast 20 years murder and manslaughter has increased 300%.

- Dr Ronald Holmes in his book " The World of Serial Killers" has identified four types of serial killers. The first type is identified as a "visionary serial killer". The visionary serial killer is commanded to kill by voices or visions. The second type of serial killer is identified as the "mission serial killer". The mission serial killer is interested in ridding the community from undesirable individuals. The third type of serial killer is a "hedonistic serial killer". Lust, thrill and comfort drive the hedonistic serial killer. The last type of serial killer is the "power/control serial killer". The power/control serial killer is motivated by the need for power and dominance (Holmes, 2000).

- Though their crimes may be sickening, they are not sick in either a medical or legal sense. Instead, the serial killer is typically a sociopathic personality who lacks internal control, guilt or conscience to guide his own behavior but has an excessive need to control and dominate others. He definitely knows right from wrong, definitely realizes he has committed a sinful act, but simply doesn't care about his human prey" (Levin and Fox, 1985).

- For "the serial killer, the motivation is not one of only money or power. The serial killer is simply motivated to kill, as you or I need water, the serial killer NEEDS to kill" (Serial Killers, Online, 2000).

- Levin and Fox (1985) found that a murderer is trying to feel superior over the victim and triumph or conquer by destruction (Levin & Fix, 1985).

- Egger (1985) has noted that the motivational factor of a serial killer seems to be consistent with research on the nature of rape (Egger, 1985)

- Leyton identifies deprivation as a provocation for the multiple murderers' frustration.
Leyton has also argued that multiple murders are a "kind of sub-political and conservative protest, which nets the killer a substantial social profit ofrevenge, celebrity, identity and sexual relief' (Leyton, 1986, p.26).

- Wilson (1972) would agree with Leyton: "Ifman is deprived of meanings beyond his everyday routine, he becomes disgusted and bitter, and eventually violent. A society that provides no outlet for man's idealist passions is asking to be torn apart by violence"

- Dr Helen Morrison, who examined John Gacy for 800 hours feels the serial killer is a new personality type (Berger, 1984).(p.233).

- Theories regarding inadequate socialization and childhood trauma are often found in homicide literature as a possible causal factor of serial murder. Starr (1972) theorizes that human cruelty may be connected to the development of a serial murderer (Starr, 1972).
Willie found the most common feature of the family background of serial murderers to be violent punishing practice inflicted upon the child ( Willie, 1975). Other literature has identified the existence of an unusual or unnatural relationship with the serial killer's mother (Lunde, 1996).
Ressler (1984) found that a number of serial murderers had been fascinated with law enforcement.

- In classifying serial murder four basic questions must be asked, which focuses upon looking at the behavioral background ofthe perpetrator, exploring the characteristics of the victims, examining the pattern of killing and method used and finally the location of the serial murders. The behavioral background examines three major root sources of criminal behavior to include biogenic, sociogenic and psychogenic. Motives can also be extrinsic in that the motives to kill are located outside the individual psyche or intrinsic when the motives are in the psyche of the killer.

- Holmes and DeBurger (1988) examine the social cultural background of
known serial murderers in the United States. There are two basic sociocultural sources that are important to the origins ofmulticidal behavior. One ofthese
includes the persistent culture of violence in today's society that is occupied by continuous change in the nature of society-individual relations. The other significant factor is in the impact of violence in early development in a family setting ( Holmes & De Burger, 1988).

- The Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1985 completed an exhaustive study that found that most serial killers spent their childhood in unhealthy, uncaring and
abusive homes (Federal Bureau of Investigations, 1985). The study also found that family histories of serial murderers highlighted multiple problems to include
alcohol and drug abuse. The study found that most ofthe murderers evaluated had a weak attachment to their family members, and that there was present a parent whom suffered from problems of substance abuse, criminality and aberrant sexual behaviors. A common theme among all the murderers was a childhood with the absence ofthe development of self worth. Fantasy was also a common theme among these murderers as often being isolated they turned to fantasy to escape their unpleasant environment (Federal Bureau of Investigations, 1984).

- Sears goes on to examine other personality traits that appear to be common among serial murderers. The absence ofthe presence of a loving and nurturing relationship with parents creates great difficulties in developing and maintaining meaningful relationships. The absence of meaningful relationships also impacts the aspect of sexual relationships. Often exposed to abuse and neglect as children, these murderers becomes fascinated with fantasy related to sex and violence. An obsession with pornographic materials acts as an aid for a serial murderer to construct a sexual relationship on his mind.

- The serial murderer may appear to be very normal often pleasant and amiable. There is often the absence of any overt mental illness. Serial murderers
have been found to be usually quite intelligent. Research has found the IQ level of such serial murderers as Ted Bundy, JohnWayne Gacy and Wayne Williams ranged
between 118 and 124. In both an academic and professional life, serial killers tend to be most successful and promising. Examples such as John Wayne Gacy and Ted Bundy are often cited. John Wayne Gacy was a very successful businessman and Ted Bundy was an up and coming attorney.

- Sears concludes his brief overview of the profile of a serial killer by stating "the serial killer is obviously a distinctive and extremely dangerous criminal". He possesses a superficial charm, whereby he may effectively mimic appropriate socially approved behavior in any given setting, but behind this carefully constructed facade he exhibits no genuine feelings and is insensitive to the welfare ofothers" (Sears, 1991).

- In examining the psychological explanations of serial murder the most predominant theory is he suffers from an antisocial personality disorder. Individuals with antisocial personality disorder display the following characteristics: superficial charm, intelligence, absence of delusions or irrational thinking, lack of nervousness, unreliable, untruthful, and insincere, exhibits poor judgment and fails to learn from experiences, pathogenic egocentricity and incapable of love. The antisocial personality disorder or psychopath is common among serial killers. A serial killer often engages in related criminal acts, experiences anxiety and tension, but experiences no guilt or remorse for his actions.

- In examining the sociological explanations for the existence of serial killers,
Sears makes the opening statement that "environmental factors are perhaps the most influential and very often a permanent affect in the shaping of the later development of a child" (Sears, 1991). Sears identifies seven aspects ofthe sociological explanations to include childhood deprivation, intense frustration, need for power, undercontrolled or overcontrolled behavior, excitement ofthe hunt, societal roles and media influence and pornography.

- It has been theorized that emotional deprivation combined with other environmental factors or damage to the inhibitive centers of the brain can account for the development ofpsychopathy.

- A serial murderer may commit murders in part because a build up of intense frustrations. This frustration buildup theory is similar to the psychodynamic theory developed by Freud. A buildup from birth creates aggressive energy. This energy is generally released in small amounts periodically. Ifnot released it can cause an explosion ofviolent behavior. Frustration can also develop from failed interpersonal contacts, school, military or employment.

- The third aspect of sociological explanations involved a need for power. This is one ofthe basic themes that have prevailed through most serial murderers. The serial murderer seeks a sense of power and control that his life seems to lack. He achieves this power and control by killing others.

- The fourth aspect of sociological explanations involved undercontrolled and overcontrolled behavior. The undercontrolled individual tends to have limited ability to control aggressive behaviors and often engages in violence. This type of individual when frustrated responds by use of aggression. The overcontrolled individual conversely learns to suppress aggression. This individual tends to build up aggression and frustration until one day a small and insignificant event causes a violent and explosive reaction.

- The fifth aspect of sociological explanations includes the excitement of the hunt. This aspect postulates that it is not the murder itself that motivates the crime of a serial murderer, but instead it is the exhilaration felt by the serial killer as he stalks his victim.

- The sixth aspect of sociological explanations includes societal roles. This theory proposes that the serial killer's actions portray the roles that society has assigned to man and women. Men are to be strong, powerful and unemotional. Women are to be weak and submissive. A serial killer looks to maintain society's roles by acting out what he perceives are expected of him.

- The seventh and final aspect of the sociological explanations proposed by Sears includes media influence and pornography. Researchers have completed numerous studies, which have correlated media violence and aggression. 'Thus, violence in the media does play a role in the short-term aggression exhibited by serial murderers as well as the general public" (Sears, 1991). Pornography is now also being linked to serial murderers. Often lacking interpersonal relationships, serial murderers develop an insatiable appetite for pornographic materials. Researchers believe that a serial murderer derives his ideas about torture and domination from the submissive roles he sees women and children play in this pornographic material.

- A biological aspect examined looks at levels oftestosterone and serotonin. It has been found that when testosterone levels are high and serotonin levels are low it tends to lead to increased aggression and sadistic behavior
according to Scott (Scott, 2000).

- Genetics have taught us that the nervous system of a psychopath varies from a normal person's. Psychopaths tend to need higher levels of stimulation and thus they seek dangerous situations. This thrill seeking leads a lot of serial killers to become police officers.

- The psychopath sees the victim as a symbolic object. Psychopaths are generally completely out of touch with reality, but seem to know what is right and wrong in society. Psychopaths are smooth talkers often well versed in psychology and skilled at manipulating evaluators. Serial killers who are psychopathic often blend into society.

- most commonly quoted factor of the making of a serial killer has been exposure to violence. Ed Gein, among others, witnessed the slaughter of farm animals as a child. Not every traumatic experience can lead a child to become a serial killer. But how much is too much. Research has not been able to provide us with a clear-cut answer. One serial killer, Albert Fish ( Bettemann) points a finger of blame at a Washington, D.C. Orphanage. Other serial killers have pointed a finger of blame at reform schools, jails and prisons. Reform school and jails in the 19th century often had stories told of sadistic guards and medieval punishments. Does violence in a confined setting create more violence?

- According to the The first Sociological theory (contributing to the explanation of serial killers), related to structural/functionalist approaches: The origins of this theory can be taken from the 1965 work of Durkheim who theorized that deviance and crime is the result of a breakdown in a social consensus regarding society goals and values. (Mitchell, 1996). The serial killer finds himself to be an outcast in society and unable to meet the goals and values of the society as a whole. The serial killer becomes helpless and turns to violence as outlet (Mitchell, 1996).

- Mitchell next looks at the strain theory, which was first developed by Merton in 1968. The strain theory much like Durkheim's theory looks at the fact that social end and means to achieve them are learned behaviors. Some people have high aspirations and others do not. The cultural norm presents a goal of achievement and success. Some individuals within society lack the abilities to achieve that societal goal of achievement and success. These individuals thus feel the "strain" of society. In order to feel a sense of accomplish goals may be reached through illegitimate means. For the serial killer these goals and achievements are reached through killing (Mitchell, 1996).

- According to the subculture Theory: Serial killers who have grown up in an environment filled with domestic violence and physical abuse may view violence as a more "natural" environment. This creates a subculture where violence is an acceptable action that is not viewed as morally wrong (Mitchell, 1996).

- Researchers theorize that violent behavior is often learned in the context of gender roles. Media, family and peer groups teach the differential roles of the genders. Males are taught to "take" and strive for power and women are taught to be passive and subservient. It is clear that serial murder itself is not socialized, but certainly the important precursors, such as violence and power are often socialized (Mitchell, 1996).

- Mitchell has theorized that serial murder represents an "ideological breakage". He explains it as a type of disruption in the status quo (Mitchell, 1996). Leyton has theorized that serial murder may even be a form of social protest (Leyton, 1986).

- The ninth theory examined by Mitchell involves a theory related to glorification. The media has helped contribute to society's intense interest in serial murder.

- The final theory examined by Mitchell looks at the role religion plays in the concept of serial murder. There is a great deal of debate as too how much or how little influence religion plays in serial murder. In the visionary serial killer, God may be telling him to kill. In cases such as Manson, Lucas and Ramirez there was a satanic cult link.

- A psychiatric approach examined by Mitchell includes multi personality disorder. The symptom of dissociation (the lack of integration of thoughts, feelings and experiences into consciousness) is often observed in serial killers. It is unclear as to whether this dissociation is an ongoing symptom or connected to commission of the offense. Bundy often talked about his crimes in the third person. It is not clear as to whether this was a legal ploy or a symptom of mental illness.

- Another psychiatric approach examined by Mitchell includes neurotic disorders. Mitchell quotes Hirose(1979) in associating homicidal behavior with depression. Research has shown that serial killers tend to display higher scores in psychoticism and neuroticism on inventories than other subjects. In the past research mood has not been viewed as a major contributor in serial murder (Mitchell, 1996).

- Sexual dysfunction is often reported by serial murderers, but is that so unusual based on the fact that serial murderers have often become isolative and lack the experience of socialization?

- Studies have found a prevalence of substance abuse as high as 50% in serial murderers (e.g. Dietz, 1990). Sears has reported that in interviews he has had with known serial killers the report of drug and alcohol use is high. It is believed that drugs and alcohol may be more likely to be incidental to serial murder (Sears, 1991).

- Mitchell lastly examines the biological explanations of serial murder. Mitchell looks at five biological aspects that may lead to an explanation of serial murder. The first explanation looks at the evolutionary and ethological approaches. For centuries man has sought to achieve power and control from the early days of the caveman to present day. Society reinforces this evolutionary belief through providing rewards for dominance and power. Power has often been gained through violence. Males have evolved to be effective users of violence to gain dominance and control. This very simple explanation is explained the rare existence of a female serial killer and the over abundance of male serial killers (Mitchell, 1996).

- The next biological aspect examined by Mitchell included the biochemical approaches. Research has shown speculation about the role of serotonin in aggressive behavior. An excess amount of serontonin may play a role in the offense of serial murder. Hormonal factors may also play a role in serial murder. Androgens such as male testosterone may have a direct influence on the brain making a particular behavioral response.

- By far the most startling research related to the development of the criminal mind of a serial killer lies within a theory postulated by Dr. Herbert Strean and Lucy Freeman. In their book "Our Wish to Kill", Strean and Freeman theorize that the instinct or murder can lurk in all ofour psyches and that some people can control those urges better than others. An example of that would be a situation in which you get angry with your spouse, partner or children and you blurt out the comment, "and you make me so angry I could just kill you". Could you really kill that person? It is certainly startling to think that you could actually commit the act of murder, but how many times have we learned of the tragedy of murder and perhaps known directly or indirectly the murderer and questioned how that person could have committed the crime of murder. Research literature simply can't answer that question. Murder and especially serial murder has been a crime that psychologists have been unable to explain....
